Emerging Leaders Fellowships 2012 Announced

More than 150 high calibre applications were received for the Emerging Leaders Fellowships at the Australia India Institute. After much consideration the jury awarded fellowships to:

Pawan Agarwal

Pawan Agarwal is a senior civil servant and he has worked in the higher education sector for more than decade. Currently he is an Adviser (Higher Education) in the Planning Commission. Previously he was Director in the Ministry of Human Resources Development and Financial Adviser in the University Grants Commission. He has written extensively on higher education. His book, Indian Higher Education: Envisioning the Future, published by Sage, is a most comprehensive review of Indian higher education. He has been a Fulbright New Century Scholar attached to Harvard University and Emory University and visiting scholar at ICRIER, New Delhi and at the University of Melbourne.

Sanjeev Chopra

Sanjeev Chopra, who is currently Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, heads the National Horticulture Mission.  He has been Secretary to the governments of Uttarakhand and West Bengal in several departments including Agriculture, Horticulture, Food Processing, Rural Development, Industrial Development and IT.

He has held the Robert S McNamara (World Bank), the Hubert H Humphrey (Cornell) and the Twenty First Century Trust Fellowships.

He is invited to contribute to seminars, workshops and conferences on development Interventions, governance issues and agrarian economy by the World Bank, UNDP, ICA, National Training Academies, Indian Institutes of Management, IITs, industry and farmers' organizations.

Ashok Malik

Ashok Malik is an Indian current affairs columnist who writes for The Times of India, Hindustan Times, The Asian Age, The Pioneer and Tehelka. He has also contributed to international publications such as Forbes and YaleGlobal Online.

Ashok writes on government, politics and foreign policy. Much of his recent writing focuses on globalisation and how it is changing our world – not solely in trade and economics but also in social spheres.

Ashok has been a journalist for 20 years. In May 2011, he authored a paper for the Lowy Institute, Sydney, on business and civil society influences on Indian foreign policy.

Prasenjit Kundu

Prasenjit Kundu is currently the President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Globsyn Skills Development, a partner company of NSDC India and he is leading efforts towards the employability enhancement of young people.

Prasenjit is an astute Business Leader with over two decades experience with Fortune 500 organisations and large India-based multinationals

With a passion for building and nurturing human resources, competency building and skill development, Prasenjit has been a strong proponent for industry academia linkages through his role as Charter member of the TiE and by nurturing and mentoring entrepreneurs.

Nevin Wilson

Nevin Wilson, a medical doctor by training, heads the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (The Union) South East Asia regional office in New Delhi.  Over the past 20 years he has managed the provision of primary healthcare to tribal communities in South India and complex public health programming coordinated to achieve the Union's vision of 'Health solutions for the poor'.  His career objective is to contribute to saving people's lives through better public health, with an emphasis on socially marginalised, poor and vulnerable communities. His passions include music and reading.

Rajib Maity

Dr. Rajib Maity is an Assistant Professor, IIT Kharagpur, which is one of the leading, globally recognized institutes in India. Dr Maity received his doctorate  in 2007 from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He has made a significant research contribution in the field of hydroclimatology and water resources engineering.  A Gold Medal was conferred upon him by the IISc for his performance in Master's program. Dr  Maity has received professional recognition through the National Doctoral Fellowship, International ICE WaRM Fellowship, DAAD fellowship for IIT faculty, IEI Young Engineers Award and the BOYSCAST Fellowship.

Harsh Shrivastava

Harsh Shrivastava, a policy and communications expert, consults to the Planning Commission of India. He is currently working on the 12th Plan, an initiative aimed to improve the Commissions current five year planning process.

Previously Harsh was a Director of CII, working on national policy and he was predominately responsible for CII's Agribusiness.

Harsh was also the deputy speechwriter to Prime Minister Vajpayee, a corporate executive with Reliance Capital, a journalist with Business World and  he co-wrote The Business of Social Responsibility, India's first book on Corporate Social Responsibility.

Mahima Kaul

Mahima is a writer and journalist and has worked in print, video and online. She has written for The Indian Express, Sunday Guardian, PBS World Focus and has also worked on video programming for Al Jazeera and PBS. She was the India producer for PBS's special coverage on the Mumbai Terror Attacks, which was nominated for an Emmy Award and her blog has been picked up by OpenDemocracy, Global Voices, Huffington Post and Ground Report etc.

Deeply involved in the ICT4D sector, Mahima has worked with Video Volunteers, a community media organization, helped launch India's first community TV channel, India Unheard, and is a consultant with the Digital Empowerment Foundation where she manages the Digital Knowledge Centre.

Ranjeev Ananatram

Dr Rajeev Anantaram is Senior Associate Editor at the Business Standard Newspaper based in New Delhi.  Previously he was Senior Fellow at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations and Senior Associate and Head at CRISIL Limited, both in New Delhi.  He has also worked and taught extensively in the United States.

Dr Anantaram holds a PhD in Public Policy and Applied Economics from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.  His areas of interest are broadly in the political economy of development and include Foreign Direct Investment Policy, trade theory, particularly the political economy of regional trade agreements.  His regional focus is on East and South Asia.

Harsh Pant

Harsh is a Reader in International Relations in the Defence Studies Department at King's College London. He is also an Associate with the College's Centre for Science and Security Studies and an Affiliate with its India Institute. His current research is focused on Asian security issues. Recent books  authored or edited by Dr Pant include The US-India Nuclear Deal: Policy, Process, and Great Power Politics (2011); The Rise of China: Implications for India (2011); China's Rising Global Profile: The Great Power Tradition (2011), The China Syndrome: Grappling with an Uneasy Relationship (2010), Indian Foreign Policy in a Unipolar World (2009), and Contemporary Debates in Indian Foreign and Security Policy: India Negotiates Its Rise in the International System (2008).

Mandira Kala

Dr. Mandira Kala heads the legislative engagement and support function at PRS Legislative Research, New Delhi, India. PRS is an independent non-partisan research institute providing research support to all Members of Parliament on legislative and policy matters. Mandira also coordinates the Legislative Assistants to MPs (LAMP) Fellowship Programme where young graduates are trained as legislative assistants and placed with an MP assisting their parliamentary work for a period of ten months.  Mandira completed her PhD in Public Policy from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.  She was awarded the UNDP Asia- Pacific Human Development Academic Fellowship in 2008.

Supriyo De

Dr Supriyo De is the Officer on Special Duty to the Chief Economic Adviser, Dr. Kaushik Basu in the Ministry of Finance, India. He has a PhD in Economics from the University of Sydney and was a recipient of the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship. He also completed his Master of Economics from Yokohama National University as a part of a World Bank scholarship program.

He has substantial experience in revenue administration, tax policy and macroeconomic analysis. His research interests include economic growth, macroeconomics and technology policy. He has publications in journals such as the Economic Record and the Singapore Economic Review.
