Australia in the Asian Century Submission

05 August 2012

The Australian Government has commissioned a white paper on Australia in the Asian Century to consider the likely economic and strategic changes in the region as the scale and pace of Asia’s transformation increases.

The team at the Australia India Institute (AII) have written a submission, contending that never before has there been a better time for Australia and India to actively work on their relationship and engagement.

AII’s submission outlines the Australia-India relationship as being marred by missed opportunities which have resulted in it not realising its full potential. Australia cannot afford to have a purely mercantilist approach towards India, and must establish a nuanced understanding of the former British colony.

Ashok Malik, an Emerging Leaders Fellow, commented on Australia-India Relations in The Conversation and the piece has been republished.

Tom Hyland from The Age interviewed Professor Mattoo and Gareth Evans on this subject. Read the story here.
