The Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Mr Peter Varghese AO will tonight in Melbourne deliver the annual Australia India Institute Oration on the subject ‘Our Journey with India’.
This rare opportunity to hear Australia’s most senior career diplomat speak about relations with the emerging superpower that is India will be open to the public, and media organisations are welcome to cover the event. The Australia in the Asian Century government White Paper has identified India as a potential strategic partner for Australia in a region facing great uncertainty linked to the rise of China. Mr Varghese is expected to elaborate on how Canberra intends to translate that vision into reality.
THE SPEAKER: Mr Varghese was born in 1956 in Kenya to Indian-born parents. He migrated to Australia as a young child in 1964. Mr Varghese is a graduate and university medalist in history from the University of Queensland. He is married with one adult son. He was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 for distinguished service to public administration, particularly in leading reform in the Australian intelligence community, and as an adviser in the areas of foreign policy and international security. A former Director-General of the Office of National Assessments and Australian High Commissioner to India, he took up the post of Secretary of DFAT in December 2012.
Electronic media are requested to have completed their set up no later than 6.45 pm.
