Ric Smith’s Passage to India

16 October 2013

Ric Smith, Australia’s former ambassador to China and Indonesia, and a former Secretary of the Department of Defence, will reflect on his 50-year acquaintance with India in a “Tiffin Talk” at the Australia India Institute this week.

His talk will paint a picture of India in the period he served there, from 1970 to 1973.

Covering the rise of Indira Gandhi, the events that led to the creation of Bangladesh, and the fascinating interplay between India, the US and the Soviet Union, he will outline this critical time in India’s modern history.

Smith will also discuss his work with India as Australia’s special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and offer some provocative ideas about aspects of the India he knew, and the nation’s future.

The Talk will take place at 12.45pm on Thursday 17 October, 2013 at the Australia India Institute, 147-149 Barry St Carlton, VIC.

A light lunch will be provided, registrations are necessary via https://www.eventbrite.com.au/event/8416009511
