India: Can The Elephant Run Any Longer?

The recent slowdown in the growth rate in India, the dysfunctional nature of the ruling coalition government, the setback to the two large national parties in the recent election, corruption, scandals and scams raise doubts about whether the Indian miracle is sustainable. In his lecture, Baron Desai will address issues relating to the national and regional political economy of India in recent times.

Baron Desai of St Clement Danes is an Indian-born British economist and Labour politician. He is an Emeritus Professor at the London School of Economics and has been a member of the UK House of Lords since 1991.  Baron is the author of the book The Rediscovery of India, one amongst the twenty-five books he has written. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India, in 2008.
