The Victoria India Doctoral Scholarship (VIDS) Program aims to increase Victoria’s knowledge capital and enhance relations between India and Victoria by attracting excellent Indian students and supporting them to complete doctoral studies in Victoria. Through their positive experience, the Program develops the ever-growing strategic relationship between Victoria and India and also creates ambassadors for Victoria’s education system. To date, 23 scholarships have been awarded and now up to seven more of India’s brightest students will be given the opportunity to work on their PhD studies at a Victorian institution, in 2015, thanks to the Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships Program.
The Doctoral Scholarships Program is funded by the Victorian Department of State Development, Business and Innovation, and managed by the Australia India Institute. Now in its fourth consecutive year, the program gives Indian doctoral students the opportunity to work with top Victorian researchers and supervisors in world-class technologically advanced infrastructure and research facilities, resulting in PhD qualifications recognised by industry and research institutions around the world. Each successful scholar will receive a scholarship of AUD$90,000 over the duration of their doctoral study, plus a full tuition waiver by the relevant host university.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students need to secure acceptance into a PhD program by a university in the state of Victoria. Please note applications are made through the relevant university and not directly with the Aii. Contact details of universities in Victoria can be found on the official Victoria Government Study Melbourne website here.
Each Victorian University will be able to nominate up to three scholars for consideration for the scholarship based on eligibility requirements. To be eligible for the Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships, an applicant must :
- Be a citizen of the Republic of India
- Be accepted into a doctoral programme at a participating Victorian university
- Intend to complete the majority of his/her doctoral work in Victoria
- Not hold a qualification regarded to be equivalent to an Australian research doctorate
- Be willing to be an ambassador for the Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships
Candidates will be nominated and selected based on the following criteria:
- A well-defined research proposal aligned with the University’s research strengths
- A research proposal that is relevant to the needs and interests of Victoria and India
- Leadership capability (this can relate academic excellence, community focused service or leadership generally)
Melbourne’s Universities consistently rank in the world’s top 100 universities, and Melbourne ranks as one of the world’s top four student cities, offering a very welcoming lifestyle in a cosmopolitan community.
This exciting program allows India and Victoria to share knowledge and best practices, drive new research and help equip students with the skills needed for future innovation and economic growth. Having the doctoral scholars study and live in Victoria helps shape future academic and research leaders, enriches the understanding of each other’s culture and attributes, and fosters long term professional and personal connections.
